1000 Miles for Myanmar
Our wonderful volunteer Sue Clarke is walking 1000 miles this year to raise funds for Advance Myanmar.
Sue said: “I’ve been volunteering in the Burma Campaign UK office since 2016. Now I’m retired I also have time to fundraise for its sister charity Advance Myanmar. Walking 20 miles a week – 1000 miles in a year – will keep me fit, and raising money for Advance Myanmar will keep me going.
This means proper walks, not just going up the stairs or to the shop! As well as green spaces in London, I will be going on walking trips further afield in the UK for longer walks.
Please make a donation to help me reach my target of £5000.
Thank you.”
If you are a UK taxpayer, please tick the Gift Aid box so that your donation will be increased by 25%.
Background
The situation in Myanmar at the moment is one of hope, for the end of military rule, but also of severe humanitarian need. The military no longer controls half the country, but is consequently resorting to even more military airstrikes, attacking villages, schools and hospitals. The number of villagers who have had to flee is over three million now, and they can’t return home for fear of further airstrikes, or land mines planted by the military. The camps for displaced people are totally overwhelmed and struggling to provide the basics. And the situation for Rohingya has gotten even worse again, with forced conscription and the burning of their villages, with nowhere to flee as their freedom of movement is restricted.
Advance Myanmar is providing funds quickly to local groups on the ground who know best what the displaced people and villagers need and can access those who international organisations can’t. We’re supporting local organisations across the whole of Myanmar including healthcare providers in Karenni state, Rohingya groups in Rakhine, a women’s rights group in Shan state. As well as humanitarian aid we also support human rights defenders, recently an LGBT+ group of activists with safe houses, and a human rights group in Chin state with equipment for documenting the human rights abuses of the military.
